In an art barn, on an Island, cradled by nature is the best way to spend 5 days to go deep into your color and value work as a quilter using ombre fabrics. Jennifer will lead a dynamic retreat, based on her book, OMBRÉ QUILTS (C&T Publishing) and fabric SKY (Robert Kaufman) that teaches you to see more closely, study hue, light and shadow through choosing, cutting and piecing ombre fabrics to create blocks that sparkle. Practicing and playing with ombre fabrics will unleash the potential of how these colorful fabrics can work for you both in large and small scale piecing.
Jennifer will begin each morning with a discussion about nature and it’s influence on us via shape, color, light, nuance and brilliance. Break out session will include tips and techniques for cutting ombré, mapping your color path, block making and the elements of good design. Being that we are surrounded by beauty on Madeline Island, we will take a few walks in nature at the bookends of the day to see more clearly what we want to interpret into our quiltmaking.
The beauty of SKY ombre fabrics is that you get the depth and variety of color range that a painter may get by mixing bits of color, blending various concentrations depending on amounts used. Learn to utilize a thousand colors at our fingertips with a fraction of the stash of colors you may or may not be able to find in traditional prints or solids. Let’s dig in and practice our color skills while improving our making techniques. Students can recreate any of the projects in the book or riff off on their own theme based off the book.
