Class Description:

This encaustic workshop introduces and expands the use of the encaustic for participants. Lisa will cover the many ways encaustic is used in contemporary artand will focus on “the how to” paint with this material. She will guide students in basic and advanced techniques creating works that are rich in layers and transparency. Color application, methods of fusing, image transfers, mark making, Pigment Sticks, pastels, graphite, and collage will be covered along with history, health and safety.Experimentation is encouraged. Attention to the fundamentals in art including editing and content are discussed. This workshop emphasizes learning a technique and developing a personal language and vision.  Instruction will include exercises, informal group discussion, working in a series, and individual consultation.

“Encaustic is a wax-based paint (composed of beeswax, resin and pigment), which is kept molten on a heated palette. It is applied to an absorbent surface and then reheated in order to fuse the paint.  The word ‘encaustic’ comes from the Greek word enkaiein, meaning to burn in, referring to the process of fusing the paint.“ R&F HANDMADE PAINTS

In my workshop you can expect the following:

Cover the history of encaustic, health and safety.

Fusing with a gun, torch and iron.

Painting including my personal interest in excavation and depth.

Collage.

Use of mixed media such as charcoal, ink, Pigment Sticks,

Presentations.  Images of my work and other artists.

Critiques and one on one consultations.  These are my specialty.

Demonstrations occurring several times during the day for approximately 15 minutes per demo. These total an hour plus during the course of the day.

While no special skills are needed, I highly recommend students read up on encaustic prior to the workshop.
