Students are encouraged (but not required) to have read Bryan’s book; “Understanding Exposure and Learning to See Creatively” before attending the workshop.

To make this the most enriching experience, your required basic camera kit should include:

Camera body


a wide angle (fixed focal length or zooms)

a telephoto (fixed focal length or zooms)

a macro lens OR extension tubes, (Kenko Brand is great) OR aclose up filter (Canon 500D)

Circular polarizing filter

3-stop graduated neutral-density (ND) filter (Lee is a great brand)

Portable STURDY tripod and tripod head

Laptop-used for post-processing/Photoshop/editing lessons and sharing your best images with the group. Tablets can be substituted so long as you have away to load your images to share on them but will miss the processing portion of the participation.

Memory cards (2-4 separate cards are recommended in case one becomes corrupt)


Memory card reader (to download images to your laptop)

Backup/storage device

Battery charger (and adapters for international participants)

The following are not required, but make sure to bring them if you have them as they will enhance your workshop experience:

Camera flash unit (strobes/ring/etc.) and batteries

FL-W filter

Equipment instruction manuals

Collapsible reflectors Remote shutter-release cord (if you don't want to use the camera timer) Lens cleaning dry cloths

Pocket-sized notepad and pen

Compact umbrella
