Class Description:

This workshop is open to photographers with a working understanding of their camera settings and a beginning knowledge of how to edit photos in Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.

This is an all-week series of unforgettable photo outings with master photographer Craig Blacklock at your side.

  • Sunset boat cruise to capture the images of the Apostle Island Sea Caves at Devil’s Island
  • Canoeing in Madeline Island’s Big Bay Lagoon, with its tiny islands of bonsai-like tamarack and pine rising from the early morning fog. Loons, sandhill cranes, turtles and geese are never far away.

  • Personalities inside the Bodin’s Fisheries in Bayfield, WI. The Bodins have been fishing Lake Superior for 200 years.

  • Dawn and sunset photo shoots with the unique quality of Madeline Island light

  • Macro photographers will enjoy exotic island plant life that includes sundew, pitcher plants and mushrooms.

Throughout the week, sharpen your compositional skills with group critiques and personal time with Craig, while you edit and print your images in our studio.

Craig Blacklock is one of the most knowledgeable Lake Superior photographers in the country and has published more than 17 books on Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. His latest work is "St. Croix & Namekagon Rivers — The Enduring Gift" (April, 2018).

Creating the Immersive Photograph

Much of my own recent photography has involved combining numerous captures to create images that more closely mimic human visual memory. This is something painters have done for centuries, but until the advent of digital photography and special techniques, was not possible with photography.

Many of these techniques, such as stacked focus and HDR photography to extend focus and exposure have been around for some time (most photography instructors now teach them, and no doubt many of you use them). So has the idea of combining one or more images to create a different combined output, such as adding clouds to a landscape that otherwise had a blank, blue sky; think of the use of green screen technology in Hollywood. We enjoy the impact provided by special techniques in movies, and there is no good reason not to employ some of these same techniques to artistic nature photographs.

What I want you to explore, is how to combine and utilize these techniques to create images that are more immersive. That draw the viewer in, making them feel like they can reach out and touch the subject, or that they are flying along side of a bird. While I will strive to send you home with many great and memorable images made during the workshop, my primary goal is to provide you with skills that will improve your photography for the rest of your life.
